Today is week 2, we were told that we were going to be given single projects daily. The project today was make it. We were briefed about different types of infrastructures and architecture models that have been made, also asked questions that got us thinking. Questions such as differentiating something to be classified as an architecture or an art installation. In my opinion, I think that something that is classified as an art installation has a deeper meaning to the artists satisfaction. On the other hand, Architecture would be something that has been thought through from a problem solving aspect for the public’s desires .

I think the morning brief was very helpful and has allowed me to think more about it. In the afternoon session we were put in groups of 5 to build something out of bamboo sticks. Never had I thought we would be doing something like this in 3DDA. I am used to doing projects in a long period of time and this project had me working in a much faster pace, which has allowed me to step out of my comfort zone. I did enjoy working in groups because everyone was cooperative and very accepting of different ideas that people had put out. The end product didn’t turn out too well but we did make it stand as a structure. Drawing the structure on paper was quiet a challenge because of the overlapping bamboo. Additionally, making it into a structure was fun. I had to think about the size of the infrastructure and how it would be displayed.  Today was a productive day and I had learnt a lot from it

Today was the end of our first week and also the presentation day for our proposal for the product that we designed using the three terms that we were given. I designed a massage sofa for the final product. In the beginning, I had a hard time thinking about a final product that could relate to all three terms. I was stuck on the term masochism, I asked myself  " What type of stuff is painful but pleasurable?" I thought of the idea of massage since most people love the pain from massage because it gives them pleasure.

I felt quite nervous presenting my idea to the group since it was my first time presenting from the start of our 3D course. The ideas that I saw from different students was interesting and inspiring. After seeing all the work from different people I noticed the importance of documenting ideas and process into the sketch book. To improve my sketch book, I think I need to do more sketches that can deliver my idea clearly even to a stranger.

This week went by really fast. The most challenging part was designing the product with the idea of limiting to 3 words. The most exciting was actually presenting it to the other people in our group because I thought the feedback was quite interesting because I wanted to know other people's perspective on my work so that I could improve. My research of the project was quiet broad at first but I managed to narrow it down so that it wouldn't change topic. I think the what well with my sketchbook were the sketches that I presented but the thing that I had to improve was the amount of research that I had done for the project. To improve my sketch book, I need to print out the pictures that I had taken and colour the sketches to make it look more realistic. Overall, I think this week was pretty productive with a steady flow of work.

Today was day two of ideas factory. As a whole class, we were given a presentation by the professors, explaining different techniques of expressing ideas through sketching. To start the day off we were given sketching activities as a warm-up, then given different types of pasta shapes to draw. We used different sketching methods, such as negative spaces, contouring and one lined drawings. These type of drawings weren't something I was familiar with, so it was quite challenging. The drawing didn't turn out to be what I liked at first but it was an experience. It was hard to see things a different perspective. For example, drawing the negative spaces wasn't human nature to the majority of people. The second half of our class, we were given magazines to cut up and stick onto our sketchbooks as a research process to our final two-page spread proposal. I had gotten some inspirations from flipping through the magazines. The collages that I had made had an impact on the final outcome of my design for the three words that we had picked. Lastly, I had begun to think of an idea for my final design.

Today was the first day of class. We combined both 3DDA classes and had a project brief on what was going to happen throughout our foundation year. At first, I found it overwhelming after knowing that we have so much to do within the year. I knew it wasn’t an easy course, which made me realize being consistent and working hard on my projects is essential. After briefed about what to do, I was more settled and had a much clearer understanding of what is going to happen throughout the year. We were then asked to brainstorm ideas about a topic. The topic that was given was the “shoe". We discussed it as a class then put into groups of three to discuss further within the topic. We had to come up with ideas on the spot which had me reacting fast to brainstorming. It was quite intimidating at first but then I slowly adapted to it much easier. In our small group discussion, we had to tell a story behind the shoe that we had on, then nominate a spokesperson to present it to the class. Our small discussion group was then given three words to discuss. The three words that were given to us were Masochism, Knot, and Ink. Masochism was a word that I wasn’t familiar with. Initially, I thought it was an art movement but then I later found out I was wrong after doing research. I found out that it meant getting pleasure and enjoyment from mental or physical pain. We were then told to brainstorm then think of ten ideas that are related to the three keywords assigned to us. At first, I related the terminology with synonyms, then further generating ideas that were related to it. I also did some small sketches to support and visualize the ideas that came to mind. The small sketches did help me with my thought process when I was stuck with generating new ideas. To sum up today, I thought it was an amazing experience and I did meet new people, learn new vocabulary and learnt a different approach to generating ideas.

2/10/2018

Today was presentation day and I had to bring my lamp to school which was really heavy and hard to display on the table because it had some weight and was pretty high. Presenting the idea wasn't hard and I knew I was getting better each time I presented because the flow of the speech was much faster and trying to explain my concept wasn't hard. We were then given feedback from people in our group. Feedback was good because I thought it is good to have peoples perspective on the work rather than judging it on our own. Each time felt better because I changed my mistakes and reflected on the feedback people had given me.

1/10/2018

Today was the final day of my 3D product making. I had spent most of the time making the model glueing and sanding the final piece. The next steps were to finalize the piece into a finished product. I had to add the acrylic sticks and the lighting at the bottom of the lamp. There were some things that I didn't know how to use. For example the types of glue that should be used to stick the acrylic and the wood together. I tried not to make the glue stains to obvious on the product because it would look very messy. I then changed using double sided tape which was much faster and efficient and took less time.

29/10/2018

Today was a idea sketching day for me. I sketched ideas that I thought would be useful to my final piece. More research and investigation helped me with my idea planning. I thought of more designs and ideas that I could use for my final project. I continued to make more models which was very useful because I was investigating on what type of materials that I could use. I drew out sketches that I wanted to do on the CAD model. I thought the researching models was very important because it would affect how the final outcome would turn out to be and also how durable.

25/10/2018

In today's morning brief we were given information on how to make our A2 sheets. I learnt what to do and what not to do. It was essential that understand the process before we proceed because it is going to be used as our portfolio for our interview. IN the afternoon class we were told to make 3 A3 sheets . It was a good practice experience because at the end we presented our A2 sheets as a whole class. It was quite interesting to see other people's work because the tutors pointed out the things that weren't supposed to be put onto the sheets. I learnt what to do and not. Some pages were too compacted and some had little annotation. I had to take into account when creating my A2 sheets because it had to a balance between the layout and design process of the A2 sheets.

23/10/2018

After having the diagnostic students joining our class we had a new project, the project was "Movement". I had chosen to do architecture for movement which was quite challenging to do. I already had my primary and secondary research done but have not thought about the concept for my architecture. I knew I wanted to make something that moves from the exterior of the architecture.

9/10/2018

Today I had attempted to make the bed design at the workshop with the machines. I had finished my sketching ideas and have thought of ways to complete this task. I started off with a couple of wood and stuck them together with wood adhesive to make a bigger brick. I had asked the supervisors for recommendation for executing the process. The hardest part of the design was to make a round cylinder. After done with the cylinder I had to drill a hole at the bottom to complete the model. There were some technical problems with the process because I had been told that I couldn't drill a hole to the size I wanted so I had to work

8/10/2018

Today I was still on my planning stage. I had thought about different ideas but couldn't select one of them because there were too many. I took abit of time doing research about different things ranging from product to architecture. Things that I had to take into account, were my primary and secondary research that relate to my final piece and how i could tie all of them together. I had trialed different types of medium and investigated things that could possibly be used in my final piece. I had thought of an idea to make a bed design for final piece made with wood at the end fo the class because I thought it would be less time consuming and it would be faster to make within the time that I had been given. My secondary research although was related to a lot of architectural designs I thought it would make sense if I had added to be part of the process.

4/10/2018

Today we brought in materials and did different model making with the materials that we had chosen and build ideas with the materials that were given to us as well. I brought in 5 different textured sheet for my final model making. In class I had used foam core and wood for my final product. The 5 textured sheet that I had brought in had related to the terms that I had brainstormed initially. The theme of our project was structure and surface. I had to think about the 3 areas that I will be investigating, which were architecture, on the body and product design, I wanted to do product design so I sketched out ideas that could be possibly used in my final art piece. Model making wasn't easy because I had to think of  different ideas to make. model making wasn't my strength which reflected on the final things that I had made because it look really bad and I wasn't satisfied with it. I did some research in the afternoon about different concepts of structure and surgace.

27/9/2018

Today I had a spent a whole day at the workshop working on the final outcome of the illuminate project. I have concluded to do a lamp which consists of the idea "Flow of light". I thought of this idea because light doesn't technically "flow", therefore I wanted to test it through this project. What I wanted for the final outcome was to make the light seem like it "flows" through a medium, just a visual representation is what I am looking for for this project. Today went pretty smoothly, because I had tested out different machines the previous day after the workshop induction. I went back into the classroom to sketch for more possibilities that could be added  to the model because I had to wait for the glue stains to dry off from the main structure in order to proceed further for my lamp. Later in the afternoon, I went outside out found some pretty interesting idea products that could potentially be part of my final outcome of this project.

44159781_910666859322265_1903961626541817856_n.jpg.1The topic of todays class was "wear it". We were assigned to design something that would go on the body as an accessory. We had to draw out different ideas that could be a possibility to be worn on the body. I didn't feel comfortable working at such speed because thinking of an idea takes time and I felt most of the ideas that came to mind were forced creativity which didn't lead to me being satisfied with the end models that I made. Even though it was quiet fast pace, I thought it was good practice because in the real world people have to work fast and generate ideas on the spot, so i found it quite useful to a certain extent.  If I were to be given more time I would spend it on further exploring ideas to what I initially had and make it even better. Also, I would test out different materials and sizes of the object so that there would be a better exploration and stronger explanation to the item I had designed. If I were to remake the models I would make the design more durable and more appealing to the eye.

44100001_728796414119909_5636729364331626496_n.jpg.1Todays task was explore it. We were told to make designs of display formats for fruits. We were asked to go around archway village to collect fruits, the fruits that we had to get were, a pack of cherry tomatoes, 2 lemons and a watermelon for the group. Besides that we were assigned to take pictures of packaging that we felt interesting or captivating. I think it was a good activity because it made me become more aware of the surroundings. There were somethings that I didn't see even after passing by everyday going to school. I was pretty amazed by the amount of detail somethings were put together. There were different display formats for different item, It did affect the presentation of the food/item that people were trying to show. Different cultures that sell different items had a different style to it which made it unique.

24/9/2018

Today is the first day of our illuminate project. We went on a small excursion to Kong’s cross at 10:30 in the morning. We were assigned to do primary research around Kings cross station and UAL campus. I took a lot of photos and also did some sketches outside of the campus. This activity made me see the things that I don’t usually see in detail. It was something that I don’t usually do in my own time. I think doing en plein air sketches is a really good way to document the process giving it my own interpretation to the sketches. After lunch we returned to archway to share ideas with our groups. It was interesting to see other people’s sketches. I saw some quiet similar sketches, I saw some pretty interesting interpretations of the same object that I drew from other people. We were then given an activity to brainstorm ideas about the theme illuminate. Our group was product, we thought of different terms that relate to product and illuminate then present it to the class. I was less nervous because I was more comfortable. We were given more time for this project, Which is much better because we were required to make a 3D model, which is quite time consuming. In my opinion, allowing more time would be less stressful therefor lead to a better outcome. Creating a product that is functional and relate to the topic of illuminate was hard at first. But I brainstorm again with using keywords and eliminating the ones that would be useful for this project. 44130510_251353162219807_1863541431621124096_n.jpg

25/9/2018

Today we had a whole day to plan our final outcome for the illuminate project. In class I developed and sketched out a couple of design ideas that were choices that I could make for my final outcome/3D model. I did some experimental model making with paper. It was fun but challenging at some times, the ideas sketched out and the model that were made had some differences and didn't reflect much. I then trialed different materials and structures. It was much better than I thought. Using the photos that I took along with the primary and secondary researches it inspired me to do a table lamp. It took me a long time to think about this because I had to think about the materials that I would need to use for the project. I went down to the 3D workshop to work on small sample models. It was my first time using the workshop and a lot of the machines weren't easy to use, So I had to be more familiar with it the next day when I start my actual final outcome.  Later in the afternoon I went to a fabric store to search for materials that I might be using for the final 3D piece.

22/10/2018

In today's class we were asked to present to our groups about our project that we had chosen. I had shown the group my primary research and secondary research. What I found missing was explanation and the connections between my concept of what I am going to make for my final piece. I was still planning what my concept is so I kept drawing sketches to further develop my ideas. I had realised my ideas were really vague after presenting it to the group because it was too abstract to be made.

17/1/2019

Today was the crit day for our project. I had been very pleased with the outcome of my final piece because I had created something that I initially thought would be very useful for the people and the conditions at the garden. I made some 3D renderings with the computer and made models to show my final outcomes which was successful. My model was also upgraded much better because I had recreated it in the wood workshop. and had used much better wood. I learnt alot in the process of creating this piece, especially with the model making. Overall I think this project was my most confident and successful because I had been more organised with the timing.

1/15/2019

Today I made a lot of models for my final piece. I tested different materials that would be easy to make with in the workshop. I first started with paper and making easy models. lounge spaces and spatial infrastructures that would be possible use for my final piece> my idea of the infrastructure that I wanted to build was that I thought there wasn't much areas in the garden where you could sit and relax. I wanted to create this round shaped space where people can sit and relax. My models showed a idea of what it might look like. I had some problems creating the model because the model was made in such a small scale which made it hard to cut shape especially working with round shapes. The whole process of the making was quite intimidating because I had to recreate the same shapes again and again. Making the infrastructure with softwood was much harder than using foam core because it was much harder to dig through with the knife.

14/1/2019

Today I had made some draft drawings of what the final outcome would look like. I had done some research one different landscape architecture installations and also some buildings for inspiration. I was looking at different shapes that would fit in the area and I thought that the place of the area was designed so tight which was a challenge to add what I wanted to design.

Action Plan

Print out research photography

Research on the area

10/1/2019

After going back to the Chelsea physics garden it was much better than the first time because I had been more aware of the details within the area that I had chosen. I put together the photos and looked through the 2 minute video that I had filmed.  There were some guidelines that we had to understand. one of them was that the scale of the infrastructure shouldn't be too big in scale. I did some research on the history of the place and looked through old photos of the place long time ago. There were alot of plantation that were used for medicine which i didn't know about.

8/1/2019

Today in class I used the maps that they had given us to make my own copy of the map. The map that was given to us wasn't as detail and I thought it would be a good idea to make my own copy of the map. I highlighted the area and annotated the section of the place we were assigned and drew the area of the place I wanted to create something out of. We went into our groups and discussed about the video that we were asked to create, also had a group discussion about the section that we had chosen. We later as a group and had agreed that the photos and the videos weren't enough to show case the areas and was a problem. So we had decide to go back to the garden on Wednesday.

7/1/2019

Today was the first day back to school. We went to Chelsea Physics garden to get us started with the new project that we will be working on for the next few weeks leading up to our UPs. In the morning we were given the brief for the project. I was quite excited with this new project, because it was the first project that had a possibility of having it on display to the public. In the afternoon we went to the garden as a whole group including the other 3DDA classes.  We were given instructions of different things to see, also given a small tour of the area. My first impressions of the place was that, I thought it would look like the photos and the videos that I have seen on the computer screen, vibrant, colourful and people. I expected more than what I had witnessed. But overall I thought it was a very relaxing and calm place to be it was quite and enough space for people to walk around and enjoy the area. We were assigned into groups. I was group A and was the end section of the garden as soon as you walk into the area. I thought it was a large space to be assigned. It was a huge space for me to figure out which part of the assigned area I was going to build a structure on. I first took photos of the L shaped area that we were assigned to. Analysing the area looking for spacing that could be a target for my final design. At last I found the very end section of the place the best because it had a path way and tree shadings around it. I liked this trip because it was our first experience trip.

6/12/2018

Today was crit day for our threshold project. It was quite cool to see the projects that other people had done . It was quite interesting to see what different people do for the project threshold. Some people did the same area and came out with pretty interesting ideas and designs for this project. I thought this project was one of the most difficult project to do because I started off being unclear of the task. I managed to think of something that was close and would fit the project. I found a blockage that was located close to archway which was convenient to find and easy to do measurements. The crit today was quite scary because I wasn't very confident in this project. but towards the end of the crit I was less nervous.

27/11/2018

Today we were introduced to new project "Thresholds". We were asked to map different ideas that are related to the project. At first I didn't quite get what we were supposed to do with this project. It was really confusing because I didn't know much about the term and what we were supposed to create for this project. After the briefing and going through the presentation it was more clear as to what we were suppose to create for our threshold project. We

26/11/2018

Today was the Crit for our final visualisations and model making. We listened to different people's proposal for dense city. I thought it was pretty interesting to see different ideas of the same topic. I learnt alot from my crit because i realized what to do and what not to do. I learnt that I should make more mapping sites and idea progression to show where the ideas came from and what was inspired by it. It was insightful to see the various strengths from different people. For the next project I would know what to add for my project. In the afternoon we were briefed about the new project "briefing".

22/11/2018

Today we did sketch models that helped with our final project. I wanted to investigate in lounge area within my site because I thought the site where I chose had limited interactions between people that lived in the area. I thought it would be great to build a bridge like structure that would connect the community together and allow them to unite in this place. After going to the site I found out that it was under construction and they were renovating the area. I thought it was a great opportunity to ask about the renovation and what it would look like. It would help with my primary research and idea generation. In class I drew some ideas that could possibly be part of my final work. Starting from using the shapes and geometric structures that were created from the hanging structures. It was a great example for the final project.

20/11/2018

Today was scale workshop where we were taught to do scaling. It was my first time doing it. There were so many steps to doing it manually. We had to measure object and use tape to measure the height and distance of the threshold and draw it on the wall with tape. We later took photos and aligned them on photoshop so that we can draw it on the book. It was a very interesting activity since I have never done anything like it before. Even though I didn't think it was a fun activity I sure thought it was a great experience. I learnt a lot about calculating ratios of things and how to note it down with paper. In the afternoon we made models to help generate ideas for the project. I made some paper models that I could use for trials.

19/11/2018

Today we made upside down structures with modrock and plaster. It was a fun experience because we had created structures that would dangle off of the chairs. I thought it was pretty cool for the structures to dry and become solid which could potentially become part of our final out come. I thought it was quite cool how the structures that we made had wrapped around the chair had lifted off of ground. Our structure looked like it was elevating. After lunch we came back and did a small tour around the class to see other people’s work. I saw how people had different approaches to the same activity. It was quite surprising that all the structures stood up. We went for a more simplistic approach. After class I looked at some buildings that were old and new. Both gave me inspiration for the next project. I did some primary research and did a little field trip around to look for possible sites that I could use. I found an area at manor house, a residential area where is a mixture of modern and old houses.46502314_328670731198098_6376713231129378816_n.jpg

15/11/2018

Today was the first day of the project dense city. Our previous assessment was to look for site building that are located on existing buildings. In class we did mapping collage for the site that we have chosen we made maps with pictures of bacteria and merged them. To create ideas for our site planning. We were taught how to use photoshop, some of the basic tools that were required to create our maps. It was quite insightful because we had to used a new software called digimap. I thought it was beneficial for our future mapping skills because it helped with dimensions and it had various site planning layouts that I could use. I created 3 outcomes from the photoshop workshop that we did in the morning and it came out pretty cool. In the afternoon we were asked to present our ideas to the class. I saw some cool designs that people made and the ideas. At the beginning of the brief I was quite confused what to create because it was unclear whether I should create something that was conceptual or realistic. Our digital collage was something that made it much creative into mapping and design ideas.

1/11/2018

I continued to build my structure down in the workshop. I had to add the details of the piece to enhance it. We had a bit of time to finish off our final outcome and finalising. In the afternoon we had the crit. I had some parts of my book that wasn't complete which include the image of the final outcome which had a big impact on the final piece. I think there were some things that I had to watch out which included, adding annotations and location of where the architectural piece would be placed. There were somethings that I learnt from seeing other peoples final outcome. Th Primary research had played a big part in most of people's research because it was were the ideas become to form, then applying it to our own interpretation.

30/10/2018

I started making my CAD model on 3D max. I started looking at the dimensions and the area that I could use for the structure. It's helped me a lot with visualisation More research and investigation helped me with my idea planning . I thought of more ideas that I could use for my final project. I continued to make more models which was very useful because i was investigating on what type of materials that I could use. I knew that the material choice would be very important because it would affect the pace and the quality of what I want to present. I drew out sketches that I wanted to do on 3D max and made small models that were inspired by the artists/ designers that I have researched.
